Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Interfaith dialogue plays a vital role in fostering peace and understanding among diverse religious groups. In a multi-religious country like Nigeria, constitutional law provides the legal foundation for religious freedoms and the promotion of peaceful coexistence (Abdullahi & Sule, 2023). Gombe LGA, located in Gombe State, has witnessed both positive interfaith relations and challenges related to religious intolerance (Mohammed & Salihu, 2023). This study seeks to appraise the role of constitutional law in promoting interfaith dialogue in Gombe LGA and how these legal provisions can contribute to enhancing peaceful coexistence.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite constitutional guarantees for religious freedom, religious conflicts have occurred in various parts of Nigeria, including Gombe. These conflicts often arise from misinterpretations of religious teachings and tensions between different religious groups (Idris & Mohammed, 2023). This study will explore how constitutional law can be more effectively used to encourage interfaith dialogue and address issues of religious intolerance in Gombe.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the role of constitutional law in promoting interfaith dialogue in Gombe LGA.

  • To examine the challenges to interfaith dialogue in Gombe despite constitutional protections.

  • To provide recommendations for using constitutional law to strengthen interfaith dialogue and religious tolerance.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How does constitutional law influence interfaith dialogue in Gombe LGA?

  • What are the barriers to interfaith dialogue in Gombe despite constitutional safeguards for religious freedom?

  • How can constitutional law be used more effectively to foster interfaith dialogue in Gombe?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • H₁: Constitutional law plays a role in promoting interfaith dialogue, but there are insufficient legal frameworks for its effective enforcement in Gombe LGA.

  • H₂: Religious intolerance and lack of education on constitutional rights are key barriers to successful interfaith dialogue in Gombe LGA.

  • H₃: Strengthening the enforcement of constitutional provisions on religious freedom will enhance interfaith dialogue in Gombe LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide a critical evaluation of how constitutional law can be used to promote peaceful religious coexistence in Gombe LGA. The findings will offer recommendations for improving interfaith relations at the local level and can serve as a model for other regions with similar issues.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Gombe LGA, Gombe State, and will evaluate the effectiveness of constitutional law in fostering interfaith dialogue. Limitations include challenges in accessing data from religious organizations and the potential sensitivity of the subject matter in a religiously diverse area.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Interfaith Dialogue: The communication and collaboration between people of different religious faiths to foster mutual understanding and peace.

  • Constitutional Law: The body of law in the Nigerian Constitution that guarantees religious freedoms and promotes the peaceful coexistence of diverse religious groups.

  • Religious Freedom: The right of individuals to freely practice and express their religious beliefs without fear of persecution or discrimination.
